Spot sharks, rays and other fishes as they cruise through our rocky reef. Sevengill sharks, leopard sharks, spiny dogfish and the elusive Pacific angel shark all dwell in our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit—like they do just beyond our walls in the cold waters of the bay. Designed with sharks in mind, this exhibit's 90-foot-long hourglass shape gives our big sharks plenty of room to glide and turn. Watch carefully and you might see big skates and bat rays pass by the window, just like their shark kin. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for sturgeon coasting through the water, rockfish and giant sea bass relaxing by the reef, and flatfish nestling on the sandy seafloor.

Great Gray Owl Nest

Explore Website - http://explore.org Facebook http://goo.gl/SFRAfX - Twitter http://goo.gl/n03NNU Watch The Great Gray Owl Cam - LIVE The largest owl in North America, the Great Gray Owl has a wingspan up to 60 inches. But it’s its dish-like face, big yellow eyes and “bow-tie” that makes this owl one of the most iconic species in the world. And while their bodies appear massive, the owls only weigh 2-3 pounds. The illusion of size is the result of very fluffy plumage. Still, great gray owls need a large nest to raise a family, either taking over abandoned nests of other big birds like the raven or red-tailed hawk, or by building them on wide, flat platforms. This owl couple has made its home in a “snag”, a wide diameter tree broken off at the top. The mother alone will incubate their nest of eggs and brood their chicks while the father hunts for the entire family. About 5 weeks after hatching, the chicks will climb out onto other nearby branches and trees, taking flight about a week later. The Great Gray Owl Cam is made possible through partnership between Owl Research Institute and Explore.org. EXPLORE is the largest live nature cam network on the planet. Look up along the cliffs for nesting seabirds, and out to sea for other marine mammals such as whales, sea lions and seals. The Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary (WISGS) was established in 1960 to protect one of the largest terrestrial haulout sites in North America for Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens). The sanctuary also protects important habitats for several species of seabirds, Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) and other marine and terrestrial birds and mammals. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) manages the sanctuary primarily to protect these important habitats and wildlife species. Best known among the WISGS islands is Round Island, where each summer large numbers of male walruses haul out on exposed, rocky beaches. Round Island is one of four major terrestrial haulouts in Alaska. Male walrus return to these haulouts every spring as the ice pack recedes northward, remaining in Bristol Bay to feed they haul out at these beach sites for several days between each feeding foray. The number of walrus using the island fluctuates significantly from year to year. However, up to 14,000 walrus have been counted on Round Island in a single day. Decorah Eagles – North Nest powered by EXPLORE.org

Explore Website: http://explore.org Facebook: http://goo.gl/SFRAfX - Twitter: http://goo.gl/n03NNU Watch Decorah Eagles North Nest - LIVE The bald eagles of the Decorah North Nest roost high in a white oak tree in a secluded valley north of Decorah, Iowa. During the nesting season the female lays 1-3 eggs and the adult pair takes turns incubating them. Hatching about 35 days later, the eagle chicks depend on both parents for food, warmth and protection until they fledge at 10-14 of age. The eagles eat both live and dead fish, squirrels, birds, rabbit, muskrat, deer, possum and anything else they can catch or find. Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. They create, improve, and directly maintain over 50 nests, provide training in nest site creation and management, and develop innovations in nest site viewing, bringing people closer to the natural world.
